Configuration Files

CyberSnap stores all configuration, history, and data in local files. This document describes the file locations and their purposes.

File Locations

Default Locations

Portable Mode Locations

In portable mode (when portable.txt exists alongside the executable), all data is stored in the application folder:

Settings File

File: settings.json

Contains all user-configurable options:

  • Hotkey bindings
  • Capture settings
  • Appearance preferences
  • Upload provider configurations
  • Notification settings
  • Widget configuration

⚠️ Do not edit this file while CyberSnap is running. Changes may be overwritten.

History Database

File: history.db (SQLite)

Contains:

  • Capture metadata (date, source, dimensions, file path)
  • OCR-extracted text
  • Barcode/QR scan results
  • Color picker history
  • Full-text search index

Manual Querying

You can open history.db with any SQLite browser for advanced queries or data export.

Credentials Vault

File: vault.dat

Contains encrypted upload provider credentials:

  • FTP/SFTP passwords and keys
  • S3 access and secret keys
  • API keys for ImgBB, Imgur, CyberSnap Share
  • Webhook secrets

Security Details

  • Algorithm: AES-256-GCM
  • Key derivation: Machine-specific entropy
  • No cloud sync: Vault never leaves your machine

⚠️ The vault is tied to your machine. Copying the vault file to another computer will not work.

Saved to the configured captures folder with automatic naming:

Custom Sounds

CyberSnap allows overriding default sounds with your own MP3 files.

Sound Files

Place MP3 files in the sounds folder with these names:

ocr_complete.mp3 OCR finished
achievement.mp3 Achievement unlocked

Requirements

  • Format: MP3
  • Recommended: Under 5 seconds
  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz

Log Files

CyberSnap writes diagnostic logs for troubleshooting:

  • log_YYYYMMDD.txt — Daily log files
  • Automatically rotated (keeps last 7 days)
  • Contains errors, warnings, and diagnostic info

Log Levels

Level Description
Error Critical issues requiring attention
Warning Non-critical issues
Info General operation logging
Debug Detailed diagnostic info (if enabled)

Backing Up Your Data

To back up all CyberSnap data:

  1. Close CyberSnap
  2. Copy the entire %LOCALAPPDATA%\CyberSnap folder
  3. (Optional) Copy your captures and recordings folders
  4. Store the backup in a safe location

To restore:

  1. Close CyberSnap
  2. Replace the folder with your backup
  3. Launch CyberSnap

Resetting Data

Reset Settings

Delete or rename settings.json. CyberSnap creates a new default file on next launch.

Reset History

Delete or rename history.db. CyberSnap creates a new empty database on next launch.

Full Reset

Delete the entire %LOCALAPPDATA%\CyberSnap folder. CyberSnap recreates all files with defaults on next launch.

⚠️ Full reset removes all settings, history, and credentials. Back up first if needed.
