Custom Streaming Protocol

CyberViewer uses a custom cvlocal:// protocol:

  • Image data is streamed instead of being read as one large buffer.
  • Large files can start opening without unnecessarily occupying all available memory.
  • A path allowlist restricts access to existing image files and their approved folders.

When an image is opened from disk, CyberViewer displays it first and loads neighboring files for the sidebar afterward.

Folder Browsing

Thumbnail Sidebar

The thumbnail sidebar provides:

  • Lazy loading for large folders.
  • Priority loading for the active image.
  • A radar-style scan indicator with progress.
  • Background scanning that pauses briefly while you interact with the canvas.
  • A Favorites filter for showing only marked images.
  • A visibility toggle in the interface and View menu.

Navigation

Action Description
Arrow keys Move to the previous or next image.
A / D Move to the previous or next image.
Sidebar click Jump to any image in the current folder.
Start / End controls Jump to the first or last image.
Space Move to the next image, or play and pause a slideshow.

Images are sorted naturally, so names such as image2 and image10 appear in the expected order.

Thumbnail Cache

  • LRU-style cache limited to 200 MB or 2,000 generated thumbnails.
  • Up to three thumbnail jobs run concurrently.
  • The active image receives priority over bulk thumbnail generation.
  • GIF and AVIF thumbnails use a browser decoder when native thumbnail support is unavailable.
  • Clear generated thumbnails from Settings > Backup & Data. They are recreated as needed.
