YouTube Channels

CyberFeeds has first-class YouTube support. You can subscribe to any YouTube channel, playlist, or video simply by pasting its URL: no browser extensions, no manual channel ID lookups, and no third-party services required.

Supported URL Formats

CyberFeeds automatically detects and resolves these YouTube URL formats:

Format Example
Channel handle https://youtube.com/@ChannelName
Video URL https://youtube.com/watch?v=... or https://youtu.be/...
Channel ID https://youtube.com/channel/UC...
Custom URL https://youtube.com/c/ChannelName
Legacy username https://youtube.com/user/Username
Playlist https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...
Direct feed https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=UC...

How to Subscribe

  1. Copy any YouTube channel, video, or playlist URL
  2. Click Add Feed in CyberFeeds
  3. Paste the URL
  4. Click Preview to see the channel's videos
  5. Click Subscribe

YouTube articles include a Play video control on the video thumbnail. You can watch the video inside CyberFeeds or open the original page in your default browser:

  • Playback Preference: In Settings → Reading Preferences, you can toggle Play YouTube videos in-app. When enabled, clicking the play button loads an embedded player directly inside the article viewer. When disabled, clicking the video opens it directly in your default external web browser.
  • Initial Paused State: Embedded video players always initialize in a paused state when opening an article, preventing unexpected background playback or sudden audio.
  • Refined Play Overlay: Video thumbnail cards feature an enlarged, accessible play button overlay for quick playback.
  • Direct Watch Link: Every YouTube article includes a Watch on YouTube action to open the original page at any time.

How It Works

  1. URL Detection: CyberFeeds recognizes any YouTube URL automatically
  2. Feed Resolution: The URL is resolved to the canonical RSS feed (youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml) via oEmbed or channel metadata
  3. GUID Normalization: Each video gets a canonical GUID based on its video ID, preventing duplicates
  4. Thumbnail Fetching: High-resolution video thumbnails are loaded directly from YouTube's CDN (ytimg.com)
  5. Link Normalization: Article links point directly to youtube.com/watch?v=ID
  6. In-App Playback: Video articles can be played in an embedded reader player with injected canonical headers to ensure stable playback without error 153

Features

  • Zero setup: Paste any YouTube channel or video URL and subscribe
  • Duplicate elimination: Videos are deduplicated by their canonical video ID
  • Direct thumbnails: Reliable thumbnail loading from YouTube's CDN
  • In-app or browser playback: Choose whether videos play embedded or launch in your default web browser
  • Paused initialization: Embedded players start paused to keep your reading quiet and controlled
  • Watch links: One-click to open videos on YouTube
  • Feed Preview: Preview videos, title, and article count before subscribing
  • Playlists: Subscribe to any YouTube playlist the same way as channels

Troubleshooting & Known Limitations

YouTube RSS 404 Errors (Daily Maintenance Window)

Google's backend infrastructure serving YouTube RSS feeds (https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml) experiences a daily recurring service window, typically between 05:00 and 08:00 UTC. During this window, YouTube's servers return HTTP 404 (Not Found) for all channel RSS feeds across the entire platform, even for verified channels and direct XML links.

If you attempt to add or refresh a YouTube feed during this time:

  • CyberFeeds will report that YouTube RSS servers are temporarily unavailable (HTTP 404).
  • This is an external Google service interruption, not an issue with CyberFeeds or your feed URL.
  • Once Google completes its backend synchronization, feeds automatically resume updating normally without requiring re-subscription.

Tips

  • You can paste a channel URL, a handle (@channelname), or even a direct video URL from the channel.
  • Playlist subscriptions work the same way as channel subscriptions.
  • If a channel has a custom URL (/c/), CyberFeeds will still resolve it correctly.
  • Legacy /user/ URLs are also supported.
