Configuration Files

Configuration Files

CyberSnap stores all configuration, gallery data, and diagnostics in local files. This document describes the real locations, verified against the implementation.

Single storage root: everything lives under %APPDATA%\CyberSnap (roaming AppData), whether the app runs installed, from the portable ZIP, or from a dev build. There is no portable mode and no portable.txt / .\Data layout.

File Locations

Data Location
Settings %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\settings.json
Gallery store %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\gallery\gallery.db (+ index.json, ocr_index.json, color_index.json, cache\thumbs, cache\video-thumbs)
Image search index %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\history\image_search_index.db (+ .json)
Capture images %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\CyberSnap\ (configurable; Videos\ and GIFs\ subfolders for recordings)
Logs %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\logs\CyberSnap-YYYYMMDD.log
ffmpeg %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\ffmpeg.exe (downloaded for video thumbnails)

Legacy locations (%Pictures%\CyberSnap History, %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\history\history.db) are migrated from automatically and never created again.

Settings File

File: %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\settings.json

Contains all user-configurable options plus achievements (streaks, counts), recent files/colors, and upload credentials (see below).

⚠️ Do not edit this file while CyberSnap is running. Changes may be overwritten.

Exporting from Settings → Backup & Data writes CyberSnap-settings.json with API keys redacted.

Clipboard Preferences

Each result type has its own setting. Changing one leaves the other five unchanged.

Setting Result type Default
ImageAutoCopyToClipboard Screenshots true
OcrAutoCopyToClipboard Recognized OCR text false
ScanAutoCopyToClipboard QR/barcode content false
VideoAutoCopyToClipboard MP4 file false
GifAutoCopyToClipboard GIF file false
ColorDetailAutoCopy Picked color in the favorite format true

OcrShowResultWindow, ScanShowResultWindow, and ShowColorDetailWindow control the corresponding result windows. The UI keeps at least one delivery enabled for each tool: hiding its window enables its auto-copy, and disabling its auto-copy enables its window.

Gallery Store

Files: gallery\gallery.db + JSON indexes (not SQLite: there is no history.db and no captures/ocr_results/barcodes tables).

Contains:

  • Capture metadata (date, source, dimensions, file path) for images, GIFs, and videos
  • OCR-extracted text, barcode/QR results, picked colors (separate JSON indexes)
  • FFmpeg video thumbnails under cache\

Capture files themselves live only in the configured save folder, never inside the store.

Credentials Protection

There is no vault.dat. Protection is two-layered:

  • Your keys (Imgur Client-ID, ImgBB / Share API keys, webhook bearer, FTP/SFTP passwords, S3 keys/tokens, Google Translate key) are DPAPI-encrypted (CurrentUser scope + app entropy, dpapi:v1: prefix) inside settings.json. They only decrypt for the same Windows user on the same machine.
  • Built-in shared keys (the out-of-the-box ImgBB / Share keys) are AES-GCM ciphertexts embedded in the app and decrypted at runtime.

Capture Files

Screenshots

Saved to the configured captures folder (default %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\CyberSnap\, optional yyyy-MM subfolders) using the file-name pattern from Settings → General → Saving. Each kind can be toggled separately (images, MP4, GIF), with an optional ask-every-time prompt.

Recordings

Saved under Videos\ (MP4) and GIFs\ (GIF) inside the save folder.

Log Files

  • CyberSnap-YYYYMMDD.log — one file per day
  • Keeps the last 30 files; a file over 5 MB is trimmed to its last 5000 lines
  • Log lines redact secrets automatically ([redacted])

Log Levels

Level Description
Error Critical issues requiring attention
Warning Non-critical issues
Info General operation logging
Debug Detailed diagnostic info (if enabled)

Backing Up Your Data

To back up all CyberSnap data:

  1. Close CyberSnap
  2. Copy the entire %APPDATA%\CyberSnap folder
  3. (Optional) Copy your captures folder
  4. Store the backup in a safe location

To restore:

  1. Close CyberSnap
  2. Replace the folder with your backup
  3. Launch CyberSnap

(Or use Settings → Backup & Data → Export/Import for settings + achievements only, exports redact API keys.)

Resetting Data

Reset Settings

Settings → Backup & Data → Reset (red button, triple confirmation), or delete settings.json. CyberSnap recreates defaults on next launch.

Reset Gallery

Delete the %APPDATA%\CyberSnap\gallery folder. CyberSnap creates a new empty store on next launch.

Full Reset

Delete the entire %APPDATA%\CyberSnap folder. CyberSnap recreates all files with defaults on next launch.

⚠️ Full reset removes all settings, gallery data, and credentials. Back up first if needed (note: exported settings redact API keys, so re-enter those by hand afterwards).
