Capture Preview

Capture Preview

The Capture Preview is a non-modal dialog that appears after taking a screenshot (when enabled). It provides a quick overview of your capture with actions, zoom controls, and an auto-close countdown.

Overview

After a capture completes, the preview dialog shows:

  • The captured image with zoom and pan
  • Action pills showing pending and completed actions
  • Manual action buttons (Save, Copy, Edit, etc.)
  • Auto-close countdown with pin option

The preview is non-modal, meaning it doesn't block the rest of the application. You can take another capture while the preview is open, the new capture is appended as a tab in the same window, and the dialog hides briefly during the capture and restores afterwards.

Enabling/Disabling

From Settings

  1. Go to Settings → Capture
  2. Toggle Show capture preview after capture for ordinary screenshots.

Scrolling captures have a separate preview preference in the Capture Widget's More menu. Each mode also has its own clipboard choice. Applying an image preset does not change the scrolling-capture choices.

From Region Overlay

Toggle the preview button in the region overlay toolbar during area capture.

Preview Timeout

Configure how long the preview stays visible before auto-closing:

Option Description
Off Preview stays open until manually closed
5 seconds Quick auto-close
10 seconds Short preview
20 seconds Default
30 seconds Extended preview

When the countdown reaches zero, the preview closes and any pending actions are committed.

Preview Layout

The preview dialog has a two-column layout that adapts to window width:

Left Column — Image Preview

  • Checkerboard background for transparency display
  • Scrollable and zoomable viewport
  • Zoom controls overlay (bottom-right)
  • Scale controls overlay (bottom-left)

Right Column — Actions Panel

  • Active actions header with status pills
  • Manual action buttons
  • Primary close/continue button with countdown ring

⚠️ Scaling is limited by maximum dimension and pixel count constraints.

After-Capture Outcomes

The preview manages deferred actions that execute after close:

Outcome Description
Save Save to configured output folder
Copy Copy to clipboard (usually pre-executed)
Editor Open in annotation editor
System Viewer Open with default image viewer
Share Upload to configured provider
Notification Display system notification

Commit and Discard

  • Commit (Enter or countdown): Runs all pending outcomes
  • Discard (Escape): Discards pending outcomes, capture is not saved/shared

Multi-Tab Previews

Only one preview dialog can be open at a time, but it can hold multiple captures as tabs:

  • New captures (hotkeys, widget, repeat-area) are appended as tabs in the existing window
  • The tab strip appears under the title bar when more than one capture is open
  • Each tab keeps its own zoom, pan, scale, and pending actions
  • A soft limit of 15 tabs shows a one-time warning: "Several captures are open. Close some tabs if the preview feels slow."

Tab Navigation

Action Effect
Click tab Switch to that capture (view state is preserved per tab)
Ctrl + Tab / Ctrl + Shift + Tab Next / previous tab
Ctrl + W Discard the active tab (closes the window when it was the only tab)

Tab Context Menus

Right-click a tab, or right-click the empty tab-bar area, to open the capture menu:

Item Description
Close Discard that tab without committing its pending actions
Close all Commit pending actions for every tab and close (asks for confirmation, with Don't show again)
Reopen last closed tab Restore the most recently discarded tab (when available)
Copy location / Copy full name Copy the saved folder / full file path (only when that capture was saved to disk)
Open in folder Show the saved file in Explorer

Closing the window × with a single tab discards its pending actions; with multiple tabs it asks for confirmation and then commits pending actions for each one.

Auto-Close With Tabs

  • The auto-close countdown runs only with a single tab
  • Opening a second tab stops the countdown and hides the countdown ring
  • Closing back down to one tab restarts the countdown
